This newsletter was somewhat inevitable. Growing up, my mom always had a book in hand…and I’m not exaggerating. The first time she met my dad was at a party where she was reading instead of doing the million other things people usually do at parties (dancing, eating, drinking, talking, the list goes on). What books are to my mom, music is to my dad. I remember him being our family’s resident ‘DJ’ (I’m using the term DJ here, very loosely, to mean the relative you call to stand behind the turntables at your kid’s wedding) which gave him a reason to put his wall full of CDs to good use. I seem to have absorbed these passions from both of them et voilà…It’s Lit was born.
It’s Lit is about the books I’m reading, the songs I have on repeat and all the weird, interesting ways that they intersect in my mind. I’m not focused on concrete ‘answers’ so much as I am on posing questions, unearthing connections and bridging seemingly disparate topics. It’s Lit is intended to be a space to experiment and explore and have fun. Mostly, I’m writing this newsletter because it’s something I’ve always wanted to read, and per the oft-quoted (but still genius) advice of Ms. Toni Morrison, "If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it."
So this is me writing it. I hope you all will join me in this project as we read and listen and think alongside each other. It’s Lit will be sent out twice a month, every second and fourth Friday. My first post will be up this Friday, subscribe now and it’ll come straight to your inbox :)
Talk soon and thanks for reading,
